Two tenure-track faculty (assistant/associate professor) positions are available in the School of Applied Physiology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. One position is in the areas of neuromuscular plasticity and/or metabolic regulation and the other one is in any areas of applied physiology as related to movement or exercise science.

1. Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor in neuromuscular plasticity and/or metabolic regulation

As part of its ongoing expansion, the School of Applied Physiology at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for a nine-month tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. We will consider outstanding applicants working in any area of applied physiology, but we are particularly interested in candidates working in the areas of neuromuscular plasticity and/or metabolic regulation. Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree and will be expected to establish a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the continuing development of our graduate program, to teach and mentor students, and to support the growth of the School.

The School of Applied Physiology is in a rapid phase of growth with strong institutional support. Current faculty members are active in the areas of muscle physiology and biochemistry, exercise physiology, the neural control of movement, motor control and motor behavior, biomechanics, and prosthetics and orthotics. Collaborations currently exist at Georgia Tech with the College of Engineering, the School of Psychology and Center for Human Movement Studies in the College of Sciences, the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access, and the Departments of Physiology, Cell Biology, Neurology, Pharmacology and Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine as well as with the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital. Interested individuals should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three recent publications and the names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers of at least three individuals to be contacted for letters of recommendation. Please submit materials in PDF to ed.balog@ap.gatech.edu and cc all documents to kristy.wentz@ap.gatech.edu. Applications will be reviewed beginning immediately and continue until the position is filled. Materials should be received by February 15, 2008.

All areas of interest will be considered in applied physiology as related to movement or exercise science. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate degree and a commitment to excellence in teaching, service, and research including quality record of publication and potential for and/or record of external grant funding. The candidate is expected to establish a nationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding, participate in interdisciplinary research activities, and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our academic programs include PhD in Applied Physiology, Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Physiology. Salary and rank will be commensurate with education and experience.

The School of Applied Physiology is one of seven academic units within the College of Sciences. We are in a rapid phase of growth with strong support from upper levels of Institute administration. Five faculty members have joined the School since 2003, and another faculty is expected to join 2008. Current faculty members are active in the areas of biomechanics and motor control, neuromuscular physiology, comparative neuromechanics, prosthetics and orthotics, molecular biology and muscle physiology, and exercise physiology. Installation of an fMRI scanner is being planned on campus. Campus collaborations exist with Department of Biomedical Engineering, Schools of Psychology, Biology, Interactive Computing, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access. Off-campus opportunities are available with the Emory University School of Medicine, the Georgia State University, the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital, the Shepherd Center, and the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
