We are currently recruiting an engineering coordinator to oversee and
manage the technical activities and staff at the Human Engineering
Research Laboratories at the University of Pittsburgh. The mission of
our lab is to engage in research and development to improve the lives of
people with disabilities. Our lab has a well-equip shop with manual and
CNC machining centers, plastic injection molding machines, rapid
prototyping capabilities, and an electronics laboratory outfitted to
develop embedded systems. We engage in a wide range of technical
activities including designing, developing and prototyping
instrumentation for data collection in research studies; working with
national and international collaborators on product development and
testing projects; training and supporting undergraduate and graduate
level students in design and fabrication projects; evaluating products
for commercial clients to support their efforts to achieve FDA approval;
collaborating with businesses on their Small Business Innovation
Research (SBIR) grants. We are looking for a motivated, talented
individual with project management experience, a desire to work in a
hands-on facility, and the maturity to work with students, faculty, and
commercial clients on technical activities which have the common goal to
improve the lives of people with disabilities.
Official Position Description:
This position provides overall supervision of all technical prototyping
and testing areas of the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL).
The incumbent will assist with design and provide final review on all
projects being carried out in the prototyping laboratories; electronics
shop; welding area; machine shop and wheelchair testing facilities. Will
be directly responsible for the technical budgets for between 15 and 20
projects at any given time as well as ensuring that general stock is
maintained at all times. This position will act as the liaison between
the Department of Veterans Affairs and/or the University of Pittsburgh
Engineering personnel and the HERL Directors on projects related to
electrical, plumbing and space upgrades including the development of any
necessary contracts. The incumbent will supervise all technical staff at
HERL as well as any students and faculty who are working in the specific
shop areas. He/she will participate in Administrative duties related to
their area, provide training and assist in teaching of technical and
engineering based classes. The ideal candidate should have a bachelor's
degree in a related engineering field, 2-3 years experience working with
technical engineering applications in a Research Lab, and prior
management experience.
