Kind Regards,
Ilse Jonkers
Vacancy:
1 PhD position, for 24 months.
Starting: Autumn 2008.
Project summary description: Several studies have shown benefits of Whole Body Vibration training (mechanical acceleration) on muscle strength, postural control and bone density. However, to date, the way by which frequency and amplitude of the excitation pattern interact to affect the muscle output has not been addressed and the transmission of the vibration stimuli delivered by commercially available vibration platforms to different body parts is poorly known. As a consequence, the conditions to obtain optimal beneficial loading of bone and muscle are not known, and the risk for detrimental effects of overloading some body parts is not under control. Therefore, the aims of the project are
1. To optimize the vibration signal characteristics during WBV with respect to muscular activation on one hand and effective and safe loading of specific bone regions of interest on the other hand. (phase 1a & b)
2. To optimize the vibration signal characteristics and application positions for local vibration to have optimal transmission to skeletal sites of interest (hip, spine). (Phase 2)
Full project description can be send on request.
Job description: The Department of Rehabilitation sciences in cooperation with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven), Belgium offers this vacancy in a two-year project to perform phase 1 and 2 of the project.
The Applicant
The applicant is a M.Sc. in Biomedical engineering, Rehabilitation sciences, Sports sciences, or equivalent. The applicant is interested to start Ph.D. research and will cooperate with other researchers of the research team.
