ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY
Position: Assistant/Associate Professor of Exercise and Sport Science with a specialization in Exercise Physiology. Tenure Track.
Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Exercise Physiology or related field with an emphasis in Muscle Physiology by August 2008. Postdoctoral training is preferred, but not required. Appropriate professional affiliations (e.g., ACSM, NSCA), and a focused research agenda including a track record of external grant writing/funding and a strong publication record is desired. The successful applicant should have extensive training in muscle physiology and a focused research agenda pertaining to human skeletal muscle physiology as related to aging, disease, fitness and/or performance, with a particular emphasis on cellular/molecular and biochemical mechanisms. Viable candidates for the position are expected to have had demonstrable positive instructional experiences, as well as a strong commitment to producing relevant and focused scholarly works and serving the profession. The Department is especially interested in applicants who can demonstrate a strong commitment to collaborating with faculty within the Department as well as with other professionals in the biomedical research and/or clinical settings.
Responsibilities: Depending upon background, the appointee would be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to exercise physiology, performance/fitness/physiological assessments, strength and conditioning, and/or research methods, as well as develop and deliver graduate elective courses in the area of expertise. The appointee will also chair and serve on Thesis committees; supervise students conducting internships; participate in curriculum development; seek and obtain extramural funding; conduct and publish research in a focused area; engage in scholarly activities; establish collaborative partnerships with the medical community, public and/or private sector community agencies, and other units on campus; and, serve the university community. A proposed Ph.D. program in Health and Sport Science is currently under consideration at the state level. If implemented, the successful candidate would be expected to be integrally involved in the delivery of that program.
Facilities: The position includes directorship of an established, equipped Exercise Biochemistry laboratory. Current major equipment includes refrigeration units (-20º and -80º freezers), refrigerated centrifuge, microplate and cuvette spectrophotometers, SDS-PAGE, biopsy equipment, cryotome, microscopes, isolated muscle preparation (Biopac), and basic biochemistry equipment. Start-up funds are available and are commensurate with external funding potential.
Setting: The University of Memphis is one of three doctoral granting public institutions in the state, with six colleges and three professional schools enrolling approximately 20,000 students. Salary and Beginning Date: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The position is a nine-month appointment with excellent opportunities for summer research and/or teaching being optional. The anticipated date of appointment is August 16, 2008. The University offers an excellent benefits package, including healthcare and retirement. The state of TN currently has no state income tax and the Memphis area has a very reasonable cost of living.

Appropriate professional affiliations (e.g., ACSM, NSCA), and a focused research agenda including a track record of external grant writing/funding and a strong publication record is desired. The successful applicant should have extensive research experience in evaluating human acute and chronic bone and body composition responses/adaptations to exercise and nutritional interventions and a focused research agenda of same. Viable candidates for the position are expected to have had demonstrable positive instructional experiences as well as a strong commitment to producing relevant and focused scholarly works and serving the profession.
