pre-ORS 2008 COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN ORTHOPAEDIC BIOMECHANICS - first call for abstracts

*********** ANNOUNCEMENT AND FIRST CALL FOR ABSTRACTS ***********

*16th ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM on
COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN ORTHOPAEDIC BIOMECHANICS
http://www.pre-ORS.org*

*Saturday, March 1st, 2008
University of California – San Francisco
San Francisco, California
Online Registration & Abstract Submission Deadline: December 3, 2007*

*Dear Colleagues:*

This is the first announcement and call for abstracts for the 16th Annual Symposium on Computational Methods in Orthopaedic Biomechanics (the “pre-ORS” meeting). Detailed information on the meeting format and registration, maps to the meeting site, and the sponsors for the meeting can be found on the symposium website at http://www.pre-ORS.org.

*Location: *The symposium will be held on Saturday, March 1st, 2008 on the Parnassus Campus (HSW - Room 301) of the University of California – San Francisco (UCSF) in San Francisco, California, and locally hosted by the UCSF Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The site is conveniently located, along the northern California coastline, ~5 miles west of the location of the Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., with presentations starting at 8:30 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon in a single-session format.

*Registration: *Pre-registration for the meeting will be available electronically at: http://www.pre-ORS.org/preregistration.html. We strongly encourage those interested in attending to pre-register for the symposium online through the meeting website so that we can adequately plan to accommodate everyone. Interest was great enough last year to require that registration be closed prior to the date of the symposium. As usual, registration and participation are free of charge.

*Objectives: *The purposes of the symposium are to communicate the most current ideas on the impact of computer-assisted techniques in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics, to educate scientists, engineers, and researchers in the use of these techniques, to promote the use of computer technology in biomechanics research, and to welcome new researchers into the field. In keeping with the tradition of the symposium, this meeting is a forum for “junior researchers” to present their ongoing research involving computation in orthopaedics. Therefore, presentations are expected to be given by the student/postdoc primarily responsible for the research. The symposium will provide ample opportunity for personal interaction with faculty and other symposium participants, and will be a unique educational experience for the presenters. The pre-ORS is the premier international forum on the use of a new breed of computer based tools in orthopaedic biomechanics.

*Topics: All topics on computation in orthopaedics are welcome. Special topics of interest for this upcoming symposium are:*

* Multi-Scale Approaches to Computer Modeling of Orthopaedic Tissue
* Finite Element Formulation of Non-Linear Constitutive Models
* Development of Algorithms for Simulation of Time-Dependent Processes
* Micro- and Nano-scale Biomechanical Modeling of Tissues Behavior

*Abstract Submissions & Presentations:* Abstracts are requested for all areas of computational research of interest to the general orthopaedic biomechanics community. As in the past, this meeting is a non-archival forum for graduate students and postdocs to present their ongoing research. The deadline for submitting abstracts for the symposium is Monday, December 3, 2007. Abstracts not exceeding one page should be sent via email as attachments in .pdf format to pre-ORS@rice.edu <mailto:pre-ORS@rice.edu>. Any questions concerning abstract submission can be sent to this email address as well. Please be sure to include abstract title, list of authors, and authors' affiliation(s). Text should be structured in a dual column format and font size not be smaller than 10pt.

*Presentation:* By submitting an abstract, it is understood that the primary author will present her/his work in person if the abstract is accepted, and that this work is not being presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society meeting. Presentations are expected to be given by the trainee (student or post-doc), primarily conducting the research, not by the PI. During the symposium the authors will be provided with two opportunities to present their work, 1) an oral presentation and 2) a poster presentation. With the submission of abstract, it is understood that the author agrees to an oral presentation, with the poster presentation being optional. Each oral presentation will be 10 minutes long with 5 minutes allotted for questions. The poster presentation will be informal during the social event in the evening.

*KEY SYMPOSIUM INFORMATION:*
*Date & Time: * Saturday, March 1, 2008, 7:30 AM–6:00 PM
*Location: * Campus of University of California – San Francisco, San Francisco, California
*Hosts: * UCSD Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory
*Registration: * Free of charge. Pre-register at http://www.pre-ORS.org/preregistration.html
