Job Description
The purpose of this position is to support the Exercise
Countermeasures Project (ECP) at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC).
This position assists in evaluating and validating candidate exercise
countermeasure hardware and prescriptions, alone and in combination
with other countermeasures, for the protection of crew health and
safety during lunar and Mars space travel. This position has technical
responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and
coordinating ECP engineering and science assignments, and serves as a
technical expert for completion of literature searches, generation of
draft operational test protocols, and compilation of test findings
pertinent to the project. The incumbent communicates project
objectives, needs, and requirements to project team leaders;
coordinates meetings; generates and maintains project documentation,
and assists in the long-term planning for meeting programmatic goals.
Additional responsibilities include support of ECP ground analog and
flight studies and may require frequent travel to UTMB in Galveston,
Texas. The incumbent will be responsible for representing the NASA ECP
Project Manager, Lead Engineer, and Scientist in a multidisciplinary
team and obtaining approvals from JSC and other review boards. This
individual must possess a thorough understanding of research and
mechanical design, ability to critically analyze research data and
assimilate findings. This position requires an in-depth knowledge of
biomechanics. Knowledge and experience with mechanical/aerospace
engineering and human exercise physiology is strongly desired. The
incumbent will also be responsible for performing other assignments or
duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
* Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental
plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing
and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company's
safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety
violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory
or management personnel * Responsible for compliance with the Quality
Assurance Plan, policies and procedures * Must maintain regular and
acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company * Demonstrate
a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer, program, and team
* Generate and maintain the ECP Documentation (e.g., study proposals,
master protocols, etc.) * Complete literature searches in support of
ECP sponsored studies, and manuscript/report writing * Generate inputs
for ECP sponsored studies * Coordinate regular meetings of and
generate products resulting from collaborating NASA centers, the ECP
Investigator Team, and other Project stakeholders * Perform computer
aided design and structural analysis, as required * Perform
biomechanical analysis using motion capture systems, force sensing
systems, and computer-based multibody dynamics simulation software *
Perform physiological assessments using metabolic gas analysis
systems, heart rate monitors, and other biometrics measurement
instrumentation * Develop test plans for directed research in
ambulatory subjects, space flight analogues, and available flight
opportunities to maximize the efficiency of the candidate exercise
hardware and prescriptions for transit and surface operations *
Support science activities for ECP space flight and ground analog
studies, including frequent travel to the bed rest facility at UTMB in
Galveston * Provide inputs to weekly and monthly reports * Present
findings and information to the ECP team, collaborating NASA centers,
and other Project stakeholders * Communicate project objectives,
needs, and requirements to project team leaders, and assist in
long-term planning for meeting programmatic goals

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED:
* Bachelor's Degree plus 6 years of experience; or Master's Degree
plus 4 years of experience in a biomechanical/engineering field; or
equivalent experience.
* Demonstrated experience in successful proposal writing and/or
technical writing (e.g. publications).
* Standard PC and Microsoft Office software proficiency for preparing
reports and presentations * Ability to complete basic statistical
techniques

DESIRED:
* Education in exercise physiology
* A minimum of 3 years of experience in a life sciences position,
conducting or coordinating research on human subjects * Previous NASA
flight and ground hardware development, integration, verification
and/or sustaining engineering experience * Minimum of 1 year
experience in a position related to NASA support or aerospace support
is strongly desired * Knowledge of current space flight exercise
hardware and physiologic trends, including published and unpublished
findings is preferred * Experience with basic exercise physiology and
biomechanical procedures and hardware (e.g., muscle function testing,
motion capture analysis, etc.)

SKILLS/TRAINING
REQUIRED:
* Effective written and verbal communication skills, both formal and
informal * Ability to travel independently (domestic and
international) * Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a
team member * Ability to coordinate and conduct hardware and protocol
studies using human subjects.
* Ability to generate and update project schedules using Microsoft
Project.
